Newspaper Tech Coverage in Turmoil

CNET reports on increasing speculation that both The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times will be dialing back -- and may even eliminate -- their tech coverage due to poor print ad sales and an inability to compete with online revenue models:

New technology has created billions of dollars in advertising revenues for Google and Yahoo. Unfortunately, technology has delivered little wealth to newspapers chasing after the trend the old-fashioned way--that is, by writing about it.

Just ask The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Word has it that both venerable print pubs plan to dial down technology coverage in the near future, apparently due to poor ad sales....

Loose lips have let slip that the Journal's Digits column, a round-up of insidery tidbits from Silicon Valley, could be deleted as soon as next week....

The Times' Circuits section is also reportedly slated for some big changes--including a possible trip to the chopping block. One proposed plan would replace the gadget-heavy feature with something aimed at generic shoppers.

David Weinberger sheds more light on the situation; states the NYTimes.com is at a "turning point."
